Gamification to educate younger generation about ocean crisis

Marine issue is actually not a new topic anymore, but there are still many problems worth attention. Hopefully gamification will develop interests of the younger generation on marine and educate them more about current state of researches.

WHY GAMIFICATION?

Marine issue is actually not a new topic anymore, but there are still many problems worth attention. Hopefully these games will develop interests of the younger generation on marine and educate them more about current state of researches.

2D-platform action game

I have designed and developed a 2D action game platform for children (ages 6-12) created using Python script and Pygame. It consists of two small games: Ocean Survivor and Hungry Bacterium. On the game's title screen, players can make the decision to play which of the two games. In both games, knowledge about marine ecosystem, contemporary issues and research will be incorporated.

OCEAN SURVIVOR

After choosing Ocean Survivor on the Home page, players will enter the game's title screen, where they can choose their own character. The idea of the game is inspired from Subway Surfer, though instead of running away for a bad cause (like running away from the police because of graffiti), players help their marine character escape from mechanical fishing nets and also encounter obstacles - marine debris - such as plastic and disposed nets. If the player does not save the character from hitting obstacles by using arrow keys, a question on marine or plastic biodegradation will pop up. If the user can answer the question correctly, the game can be resumed; otherwise it will be game over.

HUNGRY BACTERIUM

This game is essentially a maze. In order to win the game, the player needs to control a bacteria by using arrows keys to prevent it from hitting the walls, because the bacteria continues to move without players' help. As the bacteria moves through the maze, there will be plastic that it must eat. If the player does not save the character from hitting a wall by using arrow keys, a question on marine or plastic biodegradation will pop up. If the user can answer the question correctly, the game can be resumed, otherwise it will be game over.
